The Contortionist have spent nearly two decades reshaping what heavy music can sound like. The Indianapolis band started out deep in deathcore territory with their early EPs, but by the time their debut album Exoplanet arrived in 2010, they were already weaving progressive metal and space themed concepts into something genuinely their own. Each record since has pushed further into new sonic ground: Intrinsic leaned into atmosphere and melody, Language brought in vocalist Mike Lessard permanently after a lineup shake up, and Clairvoyant in 2017 went almost entirely clean and soft, showing a band completely unafraid to leave their heavier roots behind. Their 2019 EP Our Bones kept things interesting, including a cover of The Smashing Pumpkins track 1979 alongside original material.
