Every song the Courteeners have ever released comes straight from frontman Liam Fray's own life, and that personal directness is a big part of why the band from Middleton, Greater Manchester, built such a fierce following. Their 2008 debut St. Jude shot to number four on the UK Albums Chart, went gold, and landed them on the Glastonbury and Reading and Leeds main stages within the same year. "Not Nineteen Forever" remains their highest charting single, but tracks like "That Kiss" and "You Overdid It Doll" cemented them as one of the more dependable guitar bands of their generation. Produced by Stephen Street, who also worked with The Smiths and Blur, that debut set a high bar they kept chasing across seven studio albums in total, including Pink Cactus Café in 2024. Comparisons to Oasis come up a lot, partly because of the Manchester roots and partly because of Fray's frontman swagger, but the Courteeners have carved out their own corner of the indie rock world on their own terms.
