Few rappers can claim they helped shape West Coast hip hop from so many angles at once. The D.O.C., born Tracy Lynn Curry out of Dallas, was a key pen behind N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton, co wrote large chunks of Dr. Dre's The Chronic, and his own debut No One Can Do It Better landed at number 20 on the Billboard 200 with two chart topping singles on the Hot Rap Songs chart. Dr. Dre produced that debut, and Allmusic called it an early landmark of West Coast rap. He also co founded Death Row Records alongside Dre and Suge Knight, which went on to sign Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg. Just four months after his debut dropped, a near fatal car crash left him with a permanently raspy voice, a brutal blow for an MC known for his delivery. He kept writing for others, ghosting on Doggystyle and The Chronic, while his own follow ups Helter Skelter and Deuce arrived years later. At the 66th Grammy Awards, he finally got his flowers, picking up a Lifetime Achievement Award alongside the rest of N.W.A.
