About
Axel Willner makes music under The Field that does something genuinely unusual: he takes micro samples of pop songs, from Lionel Richie to Kate Bush, and dissolves them into long, hypnotic stretches of minimal techno. His debut album From Here We Go Sublime, released on the German label Kompakt in 2007, landed as one of the most critically celebrated records of the decade, tied with Burial's Untrue on Metacritic as the best reviewed album that year. From there, Willner kept pushing the sound outward. The second album Yesterday and Today pulled in Krautrock, Giorgio Moroder's disco and minimalist composers like Steve Reich, while the third, Looping State of Mind, added piano, vibraphone and steel drums to the mix. He traded laptop sets for live rigs built around synthesizers, samplers and drum machines, and brought in collaborators including Battles drummer John Stanier. The project has never really stood still.
