Few vocal groups can claim four decades together without a single lineup change, but the Four Tops pulled it off. Levi Stubbs, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Renaldo "Obie" Benson, and Lawrence Payton held it down from their Detroit origins right through to 1997, and their run through the 1960s Motown machine produced some of the most urgent, emotionally charged pop soul ever recorded. Stubbs sang baritone, which was unusual for male groups of the era, and Holland Dozier Holland deliberately pushed him toward the top of his range to get that strained, preacher like intensity that defines tracks like "Reach Out I'll Be There" and "Bernadette". Their two Billboard Hot 100 number ones, "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" and "Reach Out I'll Be There", became cornerstones of the Motown catalog alongside records by the Temptations and the Supremes. They kept charting into the 1970s with the million selling "Ain't No Woman", and in 1990 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone placed them at number 79 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
