About
The Hague String Orchestra performs under the banner of Ciconia, a project that pairs the ensemble with guest soloists to explore specific musical themes. One programme, built around the folk traditions of the Balkans, features works by Bartók, Enescu and Liszt alongside lesser known pieces by Beliczay and the conductor Weingartner. The connecting thread is the nineteenth century fascination with roots music, the modal scales and rhythmic complexity of melodies that had echoed through the mountain landscapes of the region for centuries. Bartók's Divertimento sits at the heart of the repertoire, while Enescu's Romanian Rhapsody, a work steeped in Romani violin playing, rounds out the programme with violinist Hawijch Elders taking the solo role.
