About
Also known as: King's Singers, Kings Singers, The King Singers, The King's Singers w, The Kings Singers
Born out of King's College Cambridge in 1968, the King's Singers have spent over five decades proving that six unaccompanied voices can do pretty much anything. The ensemble, made up of two countertenors, a tenor, two baritones and a bass, draws its influences from vocal jazz acts like the Hi Los and the Comedian Harmonists, while also being deeply rooted in early music and choral traditions. Their sound is polished but never stiff, and their repertoire stretches from Renaissance madrigals to pop arrangements. They hosted a six part BBC documentary series in 1984 called Madrigal History Tour, which traced the history of the madrigal across Western Europe. They hit peak popularity in the UK during the 1970s and early 1980s, then built a strong American following through regular appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. These days they play around 125 concerts a year across Europe, the US and East Asia. Their most recent album, Close Harmony, came out in October 2024.
