About

Also known as: March Violets

Few bands capture the early gothic rock sound quite like The March Violets. Formed in Leeds in 1981, they built their reputation on a distinctive mix of male and female vocals, drum machine rhythms and echo drenched electric guitar, a sound that put them right alongside fellow Leeds act the Sisters of Mercy, who actually released the band's debut EP on Andrew Eldritch's own Merciful Release label. Seven singles hit the UK Indie Chart, and their 1983 track 'Snake Dance' is still considered a genre classic. After splitting in the late 1980s, the band eventually reformed and took on something they'd never done before: recording a proper studio album. Funded through Pledge Music with nearly double their target raised by over 600 fans, 'Made Glorious' came out in 2013. The reformed lineup, which includes original members Denbigh, Garland and Ashton, even made their first US appearance as a reformed act at the Convergence 20 festival in Chicago in 2014.
