The Moon and the Nightspirit are a Hungarian dark folk duo from Békéscsaba, formed by Ágnes Tóth and Mihály Szabó in 2003. Their music orbits pagan fairy tales, shamanism, and natural mysticism, blending medieval sounds with Hungarian folk traditions and a slightly oriental flavour. Tóth's voice draws comparisons to Elisabeth Toriser of Dargaard, and the pair are known for playing a remarkable spread of traditional instruments, from the Mongolian morin khuur to the Slovak fujara shepherds pipe. Over eight albums they have kept pushing their sound outward. Ősforrás earned praise as their most diversified work at the time, while later records like Metanoia moved into world music territory. Aether expanded their instrumental palette further, adding violin, dulcimer, harp, kalimba, and acoustic guitar. Their 2026 release Seed of the Formless took things in yet another direction, weaving goth and doom metal elements into their signature folk atmosphere.
