About
Also known as: Motels
The Motels got their break in the early eighties with two songs that both stalled at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100: "Only the Lonely" in 1982 and "Suddenly Last Summer" in 1983. Fronted by Martha Davis, the Berkeley new wave band had already made noise abroad, with "Total Control" hitting No. 7 in Australia and "Danger" reaching No. 15 in France. Their road wasn't smooth. Capitol rejected their third album Apocalypso as "not commercial enough" and "too weird", so the band re recorded it with a crew of studio players and released it as All Four One. It paid off. The record spawned several Hot 100 entries, and Davis won an American Music Award for her performance in the "Only the Lonely" video, right as MTV was taking off. Davis later revived the name, and since 2013 the act has toured as Martha Davis and The Motels.
