Few New Zealand acts have made a dent on the global indie scene quite like The Naked and Famous. The Auckland duo of Alisa Xayalith and Thom Powers built their reputation on a shimmering, synth heavy take on indie rock, and their debut single "Young Blood" announced them in style by debuting at number one on the New Zealand chart in 2010, the first local artist to manage that in three years. Their debut album Passive Me, Aggressive You followed that same year, racking up six nominations at the New Zealand Music Awards. After relocating to Los Angeles, they recorded In Rolling Waves (2013) with a deliberate goal: an album that could be played fully live, no backing tracks required. Two more records followed, Simple Forms in 2016 and Recover in 2020, with the band paring down to just Xayalith and Powers along the way. Their name, by the way, comes from a line in a Tricky song quoting The Presidents of the United States of America, which says a lot about how much ground they cover.
