Few groups are as synonymous with Philadelphia soul as The O'Jays. Formed in Canton, Ohio, they found their stride working with the songwriting and production duo Gamble and Huff, whose lush, orchestrated sound became the backbone of their biggest records. The 1972 album Back Stabbers launched them into a different league entirely, spawning two massive hits in the title track and "Love Train", a song calling for global unity that hit number one on both the R&B and pop charts in the US and later landed in the Grammy Hall of Fame. Through the seventies they kept delivering, with tracks like "For the Love of Money", "I Love Music" and "Give the People What They Want" cementing their reputation as one of soul and funk's most dependable acts. They've kept performing as a live act well into later decades, picked up spots in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame, and released the album The Last Word in 2019.
