About

Glasgow's The Poets were one of the more distinctive acts to come out of the British beat scene, blending blues and freakbeat with a visual identity straight out of an 18th century portrait. The velvet jackets, ruffled shirts and shag haircuts gave them an Edwardian look that locals in the West of Scotland read as a nod to Robert Burns himself. Managed and produced by Andrew Loog Oldham, they released singles on his Immediate Records label, and their cover of "Baby Don't You Do It" was produced by Paul Raven, later known as Gary Glitter. Their 1964 debut single "Now We're Thru'" reached number 31 on the UK Singles Chart, though follow up singles never quite cracked the wider charts. Musically they sat somewhere between the hard R&B of the early Small Faces and the melodic sensibility of the Kinks. A full album never materialized, but tracks like "That's the Way It's Got to Be" found a second life on film soundtracks, appearing in both Factory Girl and Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster.
