Founded in 1946 by the irrepressible Sir Thomas Beecham, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra hit the ground running, making over 100 recordings within its first two years and locking in prestigious engagements at Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the Royal Philharmonic Society. Beecham had essentially built the orchestra from scratch after falling out with the London Philharmonic, hand picking players like horn legend Dennis Brain and pulling in veterans from across the British orchestral world. The RPO is based at Cadogan Hall in Chelsea and also performs regularly at the Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall, as well as venues across the UK and beyond. Since the 2021 to 2022 season, the orchestra has been led by musical director Vasily Petrenko, and recent concert recordings released online include Elgar and Haydn cello concertos featuring cellist Zlatomir Fung.
