Reno's The Sextones have been quietly building one of the more dedicated soul and funk catalogs in the American independent scene. Their 2017 debut under the Sextones name, Moonlight Vision, was tracked live to 2 inch analog tape at Prairie Sun Studios and took over a year and a half to mix, with Okayplayer calling it a "Herculean work ethic" combined with a nuanced attention to detail. The album earned them a deal with Tokyo's P Vine Records and a spot sharing stages with Macy Gray, Ziggy Marley, and Dumpstaphunk. Their 2023 follow up, Love Can't Be Borrowed, is where things get really interesting. Produced by Kelly Finnigan of Monophonics and recorded entirely on analog equipment, it zeroes in on the soul sound of the late 1960s and early 1970s, with Mark Sexton's falsetto front and center, thick bass grooves from Alexander Korostinsky, and arrangements full of wah wah guitars and horns. KEXP described it as a "time capsule" back to the golden era of American soul.
