Few soul groups have a career arc quite like the Spinners. Formed in Detroit in 1954 as the Domingoes, they spent years in relative obscurity at Motown, where the label put them to work as road managers, chaperones, and even shipping clerks rather than pushing them as a priority act. The turnaround came when Aretha Franklin nudged them toward Atlantic Records, and producer Thom Bell transformed them into one of the biggest soul groups of the 1970s. Their first Atlantic single produced "I'll Be Around", a B side that radio flipped into a number 3 hit and their first gold record. Hits kept coming: "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love", "One of a Kind (Love Affair)", and a chart topping collaboration with Dionne Warwick on "Then Came You". They landed a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1976 and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.
