About
Stanley Clarke has spent decades as one of the most restless bassists in jazz, and the Stanley Clarke Band is where that energy really crystallizes. The group grew out of Clarke's long running electric work, pulling together a rotating cast of serious players anchored by drummer Ronald Bruner Jr. and keyboardist Ruslan Sirota, whom Clarke has compared to Chick Corea and George Duke. Japanese pianist Hiromi, who Clarke once said plays piano like a tornado, has also featured prominently alongside the band. Their self titled 2010 album, produced with Lenny White, won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album and showed off just how band oriented Clarke's vision had become. The record blends funk, jazz fusion, and rock, with nods to Return to Forever, Weather Report, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra sitting right alongside Caribbean grooves and Africa inspired riffs. Clarke himself called improvisation the common thread holding it all together.
