Few records changed music history the way Rapper's Delight did. Released in 1979, the Sugarhill Gang's breakthrough single became the first rap track to achieve mainstream commercial success, introducing hip hop to audiences far beyond its New York roots. The trio, made up of Wonder Mike, Big Bank Hank, and Master Gee, was put together by Sylvia Robinson, who also co founded Sugar Hill Records with her husband Joe Robinson. The group never quite replicated that lightning in a bottle moment, but Rapper's Delight remains a cornerstone of old school hip hop and a cultural landmark. It proved the genre had genuine chart potential at a time when that was far from obvious. In 2009 the gang linked up with producer Bob Sinclar on the Lala Song, lending their vocals to what became another notable moment in their career. Founding member Big Bank Hank passed away in November 2014.
