The Troops of Doom take their name from a Sepultura track, which makes sense given that guitarist Jairo Guedz co wrote and performed the original song during his time with that band in the mid 1980s. Formed in Brazil in 2020, the band pairs Guedz with guitarist and visual artist Marcelo Vasco and vocalist/bassist Alex Kafer, blending death metal and thrash metal into something that feels both rooted in the old Brazilian extreme metal scene and very much alive in the present. Their debut EP The Rise of Heresy landed in October 2020 and included reworked versions of early Sepultura cuts, giving those tracks a fresh and ferocious treatment. In 2022 the band released official videos for Altar of Delusion and Dethroned Messiah, and by 2024 they had a full album out, A Mass to the Grotesque, showing the band hitting their stride well beyond the nostalgia angle.
