Formed in Warwick in 1979 by vocalist Anthony "Rat" Martin, The Varukers were one of the defining bands of the UK82 hardcore wave, taking the raw energy of 1977 punk and smashing it together with the heavy drumbeats and wall of sound distortion that bands like Motörhead had pioneered. That blend, known as D beat after Discharge's signature style, gives their music its relentless, bruising quality. Politically they lean hard into anarchist territory, with lyrics that have always favoured dark, nihilistic territory over anything remotely cheerful. Despite splitting in 1989, Rat and guitarist Biff reassembled the band in 1991 and have kept it going ever since through countless lineup changes. Their debut album Bloodsuckers from 1983 hit the UK Independent Chart at number 8, and the single Die for Your Government reached number 5. The band released the live record Live On Crucial Chaos: New York U.S.A. in 2023, proof that after four decades they are still very much a working band.
