Few Jamaican vocal groups have had as many aliases as The Viceroys, who recorded under names like The Interns, The Brothers and The Hot Tops before settling on the name most people know. Formed in Kingston by Wesley Tinglin, Daniel Bernard and Bunny Gayle, they cut their first tracks for Coxsone Dodd at Studio One in 1967, right in the thick of the rocksteady era, landing singles like "Ya Ho" and "Love and Unity" that Heartbeat Records later compiled in 1995. Over the following decades the group worked with some of the heaviest names in reggae production, including Lee "Scratch" Perry, Sly and Robbie, Linval Thompson and Winston Riley. Thompson produced their 1982 Trojan debut We Must Unite and the 1983 follow up Brethren and Sistren, with the Roots Radics playing on both. The group split in the mid 1980s, drifted back together a couple of times, and eventually recorded a new live album in 2006 as part of the Inna de Yard series, tracked at Earl "Chinna" Smith's yard for French label Makasound.
