About
Before U2 were anyone, they were opening for The Vipers at McGonagles in Dublin. That alone tells you something about where this Irish new wave act stood in the late 1970s punk landscape. Fronted by Paul Boyle and guitarist George Sweeney, The Vipers were there at the very start of the Dublin punk scene, playing what was reportedly Ireland's first punk festival in 1977 alongside The Undertones. A John Peel session brought them to the UK, where they toured with the Boomtown Rats and Thin Lizzy and played venues like the Marquee and the Music Machine. They released their debut single "I've Got You" in late 1978, followed by "Take Me" in 1980, but the band called it a day in December of that year. The members scattered in interesting directions: bassist Brian Foley joined The Blades, drummer Dave Moloney ended up with the Cajun Kings, and guitarist Sweeney later played in The Fat Lady Sings. Boyle left music entirely for an acting career. He passed away in London in 2019.
