Few bands can claim to have helped build an entire regional scene from the ground up, but The Zeros are one of them. Formed in Chula Vista in 1976, they were considered pioneers of West Coast punk rock, sometimes drawing comparisons to the Ramones. Their debut single "Wimp" b/w "Don't Push Me Around" came out in 1977 on Bomp! Records, the same year they played a landmark Los Angeles gig at the Orpheum alongside the first ever Germs performance and The Weirdos. The band even made UK headlines when NME reported that LA police broke up one of their shows at Elks Hall. Their legend has only grown over the decades. The Zeros became genuinely notorious for once playing eight consecutive replays of "Beat Your Heart Out" as an entire set in San Francisco. Bands like The Muffs, The Hoodoo Gurus and The Nomads have all covered their songs, which says a lot about how deep the respect runs. Original members Javier Escovedo and Robert Lopez, who later became El Vez, were among the founding four, and the band has reunited multiple times, releasing material well into the 2000s.
