About
Theo Bleckmann is a German vocalist and composer from Dortmund whose work sits at a fascinating crossroads of jazz, classical, and avant garde performance. His voice has shown up in some unexpected places too, including providing the alien language for Steven Spielberg's Men in Black and performing with Meredith Monk's ensemble for fifteen years. His recordings with guitarist Ben Monder, starting with the impressionistic Origami in 2001, built him a strong reputation in downtown New York circles. Bleckmann loves stretching a song far beyond its original shape. He recorded an entire album of Charles Ives compositions with jazz rock group Kneebody, and later tackled Kate Bush's catalog with drummer John Hollenbeck and a small band. His album I Dwell in Possibility, inspired by the Arte Povera art movement and built from music boxes, megaphones, and toys, earned him the Echo Jazz award for Best Singer. He has collaborated with Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, John Zorn, and the Bang on a Can All Stars, making him one of the more adventurous voices working across the jazz and new music worlds.
