About
Theo Bleckmann and Ben Monder have been making music together long enough that their partnership feels less like a collaboration and more like a creative identity. Bleckmann, a German vocalist and composer based in New York, first teamed up with guitarist Ben Monder on the album Origami in 2001, a collection of impressionistic vocalese with lyrics in German and French. The two went on to record several more albums together, including No Boat and At Night, with Bleckmann taking the role of co frontman rather than just a featured guest. Bleckmann's voice has turned up in some genuinely unexpected places, from inventing an alien language for Steven Spielberg's Men in Black to performing with Meredith Monk's ensemble for fifteen years. His album I Dwell in Possibility drew inspiration from Arte Povera, the Italian art movement, and was built around instruments like music boxes, megaphones, and toys. With Monder as a long standing musical foil, the duo occupies a distinctive corner of jazz that leans heavily on texture, atmosphere, and restless curiosity.
