About
Thijs Borsten is a pianist and theatre maker from Amersfoort whose work sits at the crossroads of live music and theatrical performance. One of his projects, De muzikale tradities van de Maghreb, sees him team up with musician Ahmed El Maai to create a show that blends live playing with film footage into a single continuous theatre piece. The two explore the musical traditions of northern Morocco, from Sufi singers and Andalusian choral music to the hadra rituals of Ouazzane and the spiritual call and response of madih and Sufi sama. What makes the format distinctive is the way live performance and screen merge: the musicians sometimes play along with the music sounding in the film, so the boundary between document and concert dissolves in real time.
