About

Also known as: TFUL282, Thinking Fellers Union Local

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 built their reputation on a genuinely odd mix: lo fi noise rock and ambient drift sitting right next to tightly written pop songs. The San Francisco five piece, core members Brian Hageman, Mark Davies, Anne Eickelberg, Hugh Swarts, and Jay Paget, hit their commercial and critical peak in the mid 1990s with Matador Records, releasing the albums Lovelyville and Strangers from the Universe. They toured Europe, appeared on John Peel's BBC show, and somehow ended up opening for Live, a crowd that was not exactly primed for what TFUL282 were doing. The band went mostly quiet after 1996, releasing just one more full album, the wonderfully named Bob Dinners and Larry Noodles Present Tubby Turdner's Celebrity Avalanche, in 2001. Their cult status kept growing anyway: Jonathan Franzen name dropped them in The Corrections, and The National interpolated their song "Noble Experiment" into "Not in Kansas" in 2019. In 2024 four of the original members reunited for two sold out shows in Portland, Oregon, proving the devotion to this band runs deep.
