About
Thomas Helmig has been a fixture at the top of Danish rock and soul since the mid 1980s, when his debut album Thomas turned him into one of the country's biggest stars almost overnight. His sound draws heavily on Motown and soul influences he picked up playing with musicians in Detroit, and that warmth runs through everything from his early Danish language records to the English language albums he started making in the 1990s. The 1988 album Vejen Væk is probably his defining moment, a raw, gloomy record shaped by a turbulent split from fellow singer Søs Fenger that sold over 160,000 copies and produced some of the most memorable hits in Danish pop history. The 1994 album Stupid Man pushed that number even further, shifting 250,000 copies, and he holds more Danish Music Awards than any other pop artist in the country, including the Prize of Honor in 2012. He also writes prolifically for other artists, with credits spanning TV 2, Hanne Boel and Sanne Salomonsen among others.
