With over 80 albums to his name, Thomas Strønen is one of the most prolific figures in Nordic jazz. The Oslo based drummer and composer has built a reputation for restless, open ended music that sits somewhere between avant garde jazz and free improvisation, often blurring the line between percussion, electronics and composition. His catalogue spans solo work under the name Pohlitz, the ambient leaning duo Food with British saxophonist Iain Ballamy, and the chamber jazz collective Time Is A Blind Guide, all released on labels like ECM and Rune Grammofon. Strønen is as comfortable commissioning large scale works for drum ensembles and orchestras as he is in a small club setting. He has written for the Norwegian Opera, contributed scores for theatre productions across Scandinavia and the UK, and been commissioned by festivals including Cheltenham and Ultima. The list of collaborators reads like a who's who of European and American jazz, from Joe Lovano and Craig Taborn to Bobo Stenson and Christian Fennesz. He also teaches at Norges Musikkhøgskole.
