About

Thomas Zehetmair is an Austrian violinist and conductor whose work spans both solo performance and ensemble leadership with remarkable range. He founded the Zehetmair Quartet in 1994, and the group operates by a strict and distinctive set of rules: every piece is performed from memory, and they take on just one new programme per year. His recordings for ECM, both as a soloist and with the quartet, have made him a recognisable name in classical and chamber music circles. On the conducting side, Zehetmair has held principal posts with several major ensembles, including the Royal Northern Sinfonia, where he served as music director for over a decade, and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. He has also led the Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur and the Orchestre national d'Auvergne, and since 2022 has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Partner of the Irish Chamber Orchestra. His wife, violist Ruth Killius, is also a member of the Zehetmair Quartet.
