About
Thorwald Jørgensen plays an instrument most people associate with science fiction soundtracks and Halloween playlists, but he is dead serious about it. The Dutch thereminist has spent years arguing, through his performances, that the theremin belongs in the concert hall alongside strings and winds, not in a novelty cabinet. He has played over 100 concerts with the instrument, touring the United States, performing in Saint Petersburg, and appearing at international festivals from Ottawa to Santiago to London. He has also assembled an extensive library of theremin music from archives in the Netherlands and beyond, and has lectured on composition at the conservatories of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. His repertoire keeps expanding through commissions. In 2023 he premiered a theremin concerto by Canadian composer Simon Bertrand with the Orchestre Métropolitain, and he has premiered works by other composers at festivals in Rio de Janeiro and Ottawa. Outside the classical world, he has also contributed his theremin playing to the Dutch progressive metal band Satinoxide's album Still in the Sun, which tells you something about his range.
