About
Throwing Muses built their sound around a genuinely unusual set of ingredients: shifting tempos, unorthodox song structures, and surreal lyrics that somehow hold together as cohesive, compelling rock. Formed in Newport, Rhode Island, the band made history as the first American act signed to the legendary UK label 4AD, and their early albums with Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly trading off songs showed just how many directions alternative rock could go at once. Narcizo's cymbal free drumming gave the whole thing a skeletal, restless pulse unlike anything their peers were doing. Donelly departed after 1991's The Real Ramona to form Belly, but the band kept going as a trio and eventually landed their biggest US hit with "Bright Yellow Gun" from 1995's University. After a hiatus through most of the late 1990s and 2000s, they came back swinging and have kept releasing records since, including Sun Racket in 2020 and Moonlight Concessions in 2025, both on Fire Records.
