About
Tianyi Lu made history in 2019 as the first Female Conductor in Residence for the Welsh National Opera, a milestone that reflects a career built on breaking ground. Born in Shanghai and raised in New Zealand, she has since become a fixture on the international classical scene, guest conducting everywhere from the Seattle Symphony and Sydney Symphony to the Hallé Orchestra and the Gulbenkian Orchestra. Her BBC Proms debut came in August 2024, leading the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a programme that included the UK premiere of Francisco Coll's Cello Concerto with Sol Gabetta as soloist. Lu also held a Dudamel Fellowship with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and served as Assistant Conductor for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Her competitive record is formidable too: she swept both the International Conducting Competition Guido Cantelli and the Sir Georg Solti International Conductors' Competition in 2020. Since 2021 she has been Conductor in Residence with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.
