About

Tim Berne has spent decades pushing alto and baritone saxophone into territory that makes most jazz feel tame by comparison. His approach, built on fragmenting and reassembling compositional form, weaves thematic material through free improvisation rather than following any conventional structure. That philosophy has run through nearly every project he has touched, from the quartet Bloodcount in the 1990s to Science Friction, Hard Cell, and the long running Snakeoil, which put out a self titled album in 2012 and kept evolving across six more recordings over the following decade. Frustrated when PolyGram shut down his JMT label, Berne launched Screwgun Records to keep full control of his output, a move that says a lot about his independence. He has collaborated with Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Nels Cline, Craig Taborn, and Marc Ducret, among many others, and his compositions have inspired whole albums from musicians like Matt Mitchell and Gordon Grdina. His most recent release, Oceans And from 2023 with Hank Roberts and Aurora Nealand, shows he has no intention of slowing down.
