Tim Berne's Snakeoil is the working quartet that alto saxophonist Tim Berne assembled around 2012, built around a core of Oscar Noriega on clarinet, pianist Matt Mitchell, and drummer Ches Smith, with guitarist Ryan Ferreira joining later. Their debut album on ECM Records landed in the top ten of DownBeat's critics poll, with reviewers singling out the way the group balances tightly crafted compositions with wide open improvisation. What sets Snakeoil apart from Berne's earlier projects is the almost conversational dynamic between the players: virtuosity without posturing, fire without brute force. Two more albums followed, Shadow Man in 2013 and You've Been Watching Me in 2015, showing the band deepening its language the way only a genuinely road tested group can. Berne's writing sits firmly in avant garde jazz territory, shot through with the grit of 1960s soul and blues.
