About
Tim Hodgkinson has been one of the more restlessly creative figures in experimental music since co founding the avant rock group Henry Cow with Fred Frith back in 1968. That band became a cornerstone of British experimental rock, and Hodgkinson was central to its sound, composing pieces like "Living in the Heart of the Beast" from the 1975 album In Praise of Learning. When Henry Cow folded in 1978, he kept pushing in new directions, from post punk with The Work to deep dives into Siberian shamanic culture alongside percussionist Ken Hyder. His trio K Space, formed with Hyder and Tuvan musician Gendos Chamzyryn, blends jazz with shamanic traditions and overtone singing, while his long running improv trio Konk Pack mixes free jazz, psychedelia and electroacoustic experimentation. He has performed alongside John Zorn, Evan Parker, and Lol Coxhill, and in 2016 MIT Press published his book Music and the Myth of Wholeness, so the academic and the musical sides of his work have always fed each other.
