Few singers can say their life inspired a Hollywood film, but Tim Ripper Owens can. The Akron, Ohio native picked up his nickname from a Judas Priest song while fronting the tribute act British Steel, then landed the actual gig in 1996 when Priest needed a new frontman to replace Rob Halford. His operatic, wide ranging voice carried two studio albums with the band, including Jugulator, which scored a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance. Since leaving Priest, Owens has rarely stood still. He fronted Iced Earth, sang for Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force, and kept busy with Charred Walls of the Damned, Dio Disciples, and the supergroup cover band HAIL! He released his debut solo album Play My Game in 2009, followed decades later by Return to Death Row in 2022 under the name Ripper. These days he is out front with KK's Priest, the band formed by former Judas Priest guitarist KK Downing, keeping the heavy metal flame burning on his own terms.
