About
Also known as: The Tom Tom Club
Tom Tom Club started as a side project while Talking Heads were on a break, and it ended up with a life of its own. Husband and wife Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth named it after the dancehall in the Bahamas where they first rehearsed, and their 1981 self titled debut gave the world "Genius of Love" and "Wordy Rappinghood". The first became a US top 40 hit, the second made the UK top 10, and the album went gold. A cover of The Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk" later reached the UK top 30. "Genius of Love" has had a remarkable afterlife, sampled or reworked by artists including Mariah Carey for "Fantasy" and Mark Morrison for "Return of the Mack". Hip hop picked it up early too. Later albums like Close to the Bone and Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom took in a harder, more rock leaning sound, with guests such as Lou Reed, David Byrne and Jerry Harrison dropping by.
