About
Also known as: Antônio José Santana Martins, Tom Ze, Tom ZĂŠ
Tom Zé is one of the great oddballs of Tropicália, a Brazilian singer songwriter who turned typewriters and other everyday objects into instruments. He contributed to the 1968 movement manifesto Tropicália: ou Panis et Circenses alongside Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa and Os Mutantes. Then, while his peers went on to big careers, he slipped into obscurity through the 1970s and 1980s, tinkering with strange new composition styles away from the public eye. The twist came in the early 1990s, when David Byrne stumbled on Estudando o Samba on a trip to Rio and made Zé the first artist signed to his Luaka Bop label. His music mixes samba, bossa nova, forró, folk and rock and roll with dissonance, polytonality and odd time signatures, and he has worked with the concrete poets of São Paulo. Critics have compared him to Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. His discography runs from Grande Liquidação in 1968 to Língua Brasileira in 2022.
