About
Also known as: Tomy Emmanuel, William Thomas Emmanuel, トミー・エマニュエル, 토미 엠마누엘
Tommy Emmanuel plays acoustic guitar like there are three people on stage. Thumb on the bass line, fingers on chords and melody, and a hand free to slap the body of the guitar like a drum kit. He never reads music, never works from a setlist, and tends to nail his studio recordings in a single take. In 2019 MusicRadar named him the best acoustic guitarist in the world. The Australian built his name as a session player and as a member of bands like Dragon and John Farnham's group before going solo. His fingerstyle approach comes from Chet Atkins, who later gave him the title of Certified Guitar Player, and he played the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics with his brother Phil. His battered Maton guitars are famous in their own right. Collaborations with players like Billy Strings and Igor Presnyakov, plus live takes of Classical Gas and Tears in Heaven, are easy to find online.
