About
Also known as: Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Zürich Tonhalle
Founded in 1868, the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich is one of Switzerland's most storied symphony orchestras, resident at Zürich's Tonhalle concert hall. Its early decades were shaped by Friedrich Hegar, who led the orchestra for its first 38 years, and then Volkmar Andreae, whose tenure of more than four decades remains the longest in the orchestra's history, covering around 1,300 concerts and introducing the first family concerts in 1928. The recording era under David Zinman, chief conductor from 1995 to 2014, put the orchestra firmly on the international map. His Arte Nova cycle of the complete Beethoven symphonies drew wide attention for using the Jonathan Del Mar critical edition alongside Beethoven's own metronome markings, one of the earliest sets to do so. Zinman also launched the tonhalleLATE series, pairing shorter symphonic programmes with electronic music and socialising. Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi has been at the helm since 2019, with his contract now extended through the 2028 to 2029 season.
