Few R&B groups from the late 1980s managed to sound simultaneously retro and fresh the way Tony Toni Toné did. The Oakland trio of brothers D'Wayne and Raphael Wiggins and their cousin Timothy Christian Riley built their sound on live instrumentation, classic soul influences, and sharp songwriting rather than the polished studio sheen that dominated the era. Their 1990 album The Revival broke them into the mainstream with four number one R&B hits, including "Feels Good", which crossed over to number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million copies. Their 1993 album Sons of Soul is the one that cemented their legacy. A double platinum set that drew consciously from the Temptations, Sly and the Family Stone, and James Brown, it is widely credited as a forerunner to the neo soul movement. The group also contributed to film soundtracks for Boyz n the Hood and Poetic Justice during their run, and during their hiatus wrote and produced for artists including D'Angelo and A Tribe Called Quest. They split after the 1996 album House of Music, which critics tend to call their finest work.
