About
Toonkunst Amersfoort is the oldest choir in its city, a mixed amateur ensemble of around 85 singers that has been going for 148 years. The programme is deliberately broad. Bach, Handel and Brahms sit comfortably next to twentieth century and modern repertoire by composers like Duruflé and Britten. The choir has a particular soft spot for big sacred works, and Bach's Christmas Oratorio is a good example. It was written in Leipzig for the Christmas season of 1734 and 1735 and is made up of six linked cantatas. Toonkunst Amersfoort has performed selected parts of it, including the lesser heard fifth and sixth, with a baroque orchestra and a line up of professional soloists.
