About
Tord Gustavsen has built one of the most distinctive voices in European jazz through his various ensemble projects, and the Quartet is one of those formations. The Norwegian pianist, rooted in the Oslo jazz scene, has released a string of albums on ECM Records, a label whose sonic aesthetic suits his contemplative, Nordic sound perfectly. His music draws heavily on Norwegian folk traditions, giving it a sense of place that sets it apart from more generic jazz piano work. Alongside longtime collaborator and drummer Jarle Vespestad, who has been part of Gustavsen's projects for well over two decades, the group has contributed to recordings including Extended Circle in 2014. Vespestad brings a restrained yet deeply rhythmic sensibility to the music, and together with Gustavsen they have shaped a sound that is quietly intense and consistently unhurried, never in a rush to impress but always worth the time.
