About
Also known as: Tord Gustaven Trio
Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen has been making quietly distinctive jazz since releasing his trio debut, Changing Places, on ECM Records in 2003. His approach pulls from an unusually wide range of sources, weaving gospel, Scandinavian folk flavours and cool jazz together into something spacious and contemplative. The trio format has been central to his work, and the current lineup features Steinar Raknes on bass and Jarle Vespestad on drums. Their 2024 album Seeing continues in that same meditative vein. Beyond the trio, Gustavsen has contributed to around 30 releases with other artists, among them Solveig Slettahjell, Mahsa Vahdat and the Oslo Cathedral Choir. In 2024 the Académie du Jazz in France recognised him with the Prix du musicien européen, their European Musician of the Year award.
