Trafassi have been bringing Caribbean flavour to the Dutch charts since 1981, when former members of The Happy Boys, the backing band of Lieve Hugo, formed the group. The name comes from Sranan Tongo and means "a different way", which fits a band that blends kaseko, Caribbean pop and original material in Dutch, English and Sranan Tongo. Their biggest moment came in 1985 with Wasmasjien, a reworking of the Papiamento song Wasmashin by Curaçaoan musician Macario 'Makai' Prudencia, which climbed to number ten in the Dutch Top 40 and even got an unofficial music video through a Walt Disney cartoon show. They also put their own spin on Je t'aime... moi non plus, retitling it Me Jam with equally cheeky lyrics, and covered the Ray Charles soul ballad The Train. After a split in the late 1990s between lead singer and percussionist Edgar Burgos and the rest of the band, Burgos kept the Trafassi name going and has continued performing with a new lineup ever since.
