About
Trio Da Kali carries a musical tradition that stretches back to the Mali empire of the 13th century. The Bamako group, made up of vocalist Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté, balafonist Lassana Diabaté, and ngoni player Mamadou Kouyaté, are all rooted in the griot lineages of the Mande jelis, hereditary musician clans whose repertoire includes ancient pieces like "Sunjata" and the love song "Tita". Their name, Da Kali, translates to "to give a pledge", and that sense of devotion to a living tradition runs through everything they do. Their most celebrated project is Ladilikan, a 2017 collaboration with the American string quartet Kronos Quartet, released on World Circuit. The record is a fascinating meeting point, weaving core Mande jeli pieces alongside arrangements of songs by gospel legend Mahalia Jackson. The two groups took the album on the road across multiple continents, and the record went on to win awards. Their music also reached a massive new audience when the song Demba by Tsha featuring Trio Da Kali landed on the FIFA 22 soundtrack.
