About
Also known as: Trio Mocoto, Trio Mokoto
Few bands can claim they helped invent a genre, but Trio Mocotó genuinely can. Formed in 1968 at a São Paulo nightclub, they were central to shaping samba rock, that infectious fusion that blends samba rhythms with electric groove. Their tightest early work came as the backing band for Jorge Ben, lending their feel to landmark records like Fôrça Bruta and A Tábua de Esmeralda. The 1971 single Coqueiro Verde, penned by Erasmo Carlos, gave them a hit of their own. After a long hiatus, their 2001 comeback album Samba Rock brought them a whole new audience across Europe and Japan, and earned them the APCA award for Best Group that same year. They followed it up with Beleza! Beleza!! Beleza!!! in 2004, and kept turning up at major festivals worldwide. In 2011 they showed up on the Red Hot + Rio 2 charity compilation alongside Mayra Andrade, proof that their groove still had plenty of pull.
