About
Born out of crisis, the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra brought together 74 Ukrainian musicians, a mix of recent refugees and Ukrainians playing in leading European ensembles like the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Belgian National Orchestra. Canadian conductor Keri Lynn Wilson, herself of Ukrainian ancestry, was the driving force behind the project, with the Metropolitan Opera and the Polish National Opera backing it from the start as a show of solidarity. Their debut in Warsaw in July 2022 set the tone: a programme that paired Valentyn Silvestrov and Brahms with Beethoven's Fidelio, followed days later by a BBC Proms performance The Guardian called "highly impressive and deeply moving." A world tour followed, drawing standing ovations across Europe and critical praise in New York and Washington. Deutsche Grammophon has since released recordings with the orchestra, including a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 sung in Ukrainian, and a live recording of his Fifth Symphony captured in Vilnius during their 2025 tour.
