Few acts have kept reinventing themselves as restlessly as UNKLE, the London electronic project founded by James Lavelle in 1992. Their debut album Psyence Fiction, released in 1998 with DJ Shadow behind the boards, pulled in an extraordinary roster of guests: Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft, Mike D, Kool G Rap and Mark Hollis all showed up. Shadow left after the tour, and Lavelle has been assembling new lineups and collaborators ever since, shifting from trip hop toward breakbeat, electronica and alternative rock textures. The catalogue that followed kept that guest heavy approach going. Never, Never, Land brought in Josh Homme, Robert Del Naja and Ian Brown, while War Stories and the cinematic End Titles... Stories for Film pushed into soundtrack territory. Ian Astbury of The Cult became a recurring presence, appearing on the fan favourite track Burn My Shadow. Nick Cave featured on Money and Run, which gives you a fair sense of the range UNKLE operate in. Lavelle remains the constant thread through it all, steering a project that resists easy genre labels.
